The island of shipowners

Oinousses comprise a small cluster of nine islands and islets in the north-eastern Aegean, between Chios and the coast of Asia Minor. A protected area, part of the Natura 2000 network, it offers a virgin landscape. Small, uninhabited islets unveil an idyllic natural richness, pristine fishing grounds, enchanting depths, and scenes of an unexplored Aegean Sea.
Renowned since the 6th century BC for their fine wine, Oinousses has always been the island of shipowners. The first Greek commercial steamships were from Inousses, writing the opening chapter of modern Greek shipping. Many shipowners hail from here, and at the harbour, two statues await: the Inoussian Mother, waving a handkerchief to see her children off as they head for the oceans, and a bronze mermaid with a crown and a sailing ship in her left hand, the sailor’s eternal companion at sea.
The picturesque Hora, built amphitheatrically, consists of tall traditional houses with tiled roofs and narrow paved alleys, where captains’ mansions stand alongside the modest houses of the waterfront.
In the summer, shipowners, captains, and emigrants return to their ancestral land, opening their mansions and transforming this border island into a cosmopolitan resort. The people of Oinousses are proud of their homeland and ancient roots, welcoming you with authentic island hospitality.
