A heroic speck in the sea

Travel guides often describe Psara as “a speck in the sea, far from the well-known tourist trails”. However, they only tell half the truth. Because on this speck, “in-the-know” travellers from all over the world discover —or, better yet, create— their personal paradise, using the materials abundantly offered by Aegean nature. And, of course, behind this tranquillity hides an island with a heroic soul.
Psara, inhabited since Mycenaean times, is recorded in the pages of Greek history in bold, indelible letters. Its active participation in the Greek Revolution and its total destruction by Ottoman forces in June 1824 highlighted the heroism of the inhabitants. The event was lauded by the poet Dionysios Solomos and captured in paintings by the artist Nikolaos Gyzis
The locals, proud of their glorious past, fly the flag of the 1821 Revolution at the port – white and red, with a cross, anchor and snake, symbolising sacrifice and freedom.
Beyond its glorious history, Psara today offers authentic hospitality, abundant fish, countless beaches and a tranquillity rarely found elsewhere. A barren island of wild beauty and delicious food, it awaits you to join in creating your own paradise. A small speck in the sea that nevertheless summarises the entire Aegean.
