Samothraki rises from the Thracian Sea, crowned by the highest mountain in the Aegean, Mount Saos. According to Homer, it was from here that the god Poseidon watched the progress of the Trojan War, and as such, the island is shrouded in mythical glamour.
Samothraki is renowned for its archaeological treasures. Everyone is familiar with the statue of Nike, the Winged Victory, currently housed in the Louvre Museum in Paris, which was unearthed on the island.
