Skopelos is the largest island of the Northern Sporades, situated between Skiathos and Alonissos. It is a verdant island where pine forests extend to the sea, embracing its shores. Its image is composed by emerald waters, Pelion-style architecture, imposing monasteries, and an authentic island atmosphere.
Its ancient name was Peparethos, derived from the son of Dionysus and Ariadne, who, according to myth, was the first inhabitant of the island. The name Skopelos emerged during the Roman era and is likely due to the numerous reefs and shallows (skopeli) surrounding the island, while it was also renowned for its olive oil and exquisite wine.
Today, Skopelos is known for its stunning beaches, where the green of the pine trees meets the blue of the Aegean Sea. The beauty of the island has even captivated film producers, who chose to shoot scenes from Mamma Mia! here, making the island famous around the world.
The beautiful, amphitheatrically built Chora, with its picturesque stone-paved narrow streets, scattered churches, and beautiful homes, creates a scene that exudes elegance and tradition. The other hamlets boast well-maintained houses that follow traditional architecture and hidden colourful corners.
