The famous naval town

On the southern coast of Central Greece, following a beautiful journey through the mountain massifs of Fokida, Galaxidi emerges.  Stately and picturesque, a historic symbol of seamanship, it reveals itself at the head of a rocky cove overlooking islets and lighthouses. Its two natural harbours, Agora and Chirolakas, were for many years the base for spirited sailors who sailed the entire Mediterranean in the famous Galaxidi vessels.
Narrow cobblestone streets, neoclassical captains' houses with colourful façades, marble arches astride doors, flowery pebble yards, and stone balconies adorned with ship figureheads compose a picturesque architectural landscape. Among the wonderfully preserved buildings, Tsalangyra Mansion (which now houses the Town Hall), the stone Girls' School, and Bourzeiko Mansion stand out.
Galaxidi features a beautiful park and five traditional squares, while the church of Agios Nikolaos, the patron saint of sailors, stands tall at the highest point of the town.  The heart of the town beats at its picturesque harbour that reflects the pastel shades of the mansion façades in the water.  Here, you will find cafés and restaurants where you can enjoy the freshest seafood, delicious fish meze, and exceptional ravani (a semolina cake soaked in syrup).
Galaxidi resembles an island run ashore and it exudes tranquillity, nobility, and romance.  It is also famous for its carnival. Every Clean Monday (Ash Monday), the traditional Dionysian custom of alevromoutzouroma (flour-throwing) takes place here:  young and old, locals and out-of-towners, throw coloured flour and ash soot at each other, creating an intoxicating atmosphere of fun, music, laughter, and dance.
