Built on Mount Mainalo at an elevation of 1,100m., Stemnitsa is a small traditional village set amidst lush greenery, with majestic views towards the steep peaks that surround it. Traditional architecture, mansions, impressive Byzantine churches, picturesque cobbled paths meandering beneath walnut and cherry trees, and stone fountains under the shade of centuries-old plane trees compose a dreamlike mountain destination. The unique terrain and the constraints of the land prompted the locals from early on to develop special skills to the fullest, including silversmithing and goldsmithing. “Chryssikoi” (goldsmiths) and “asimitzides” (silversmiths), famous craftsmen of wide renown, created unsurpassed artefacts and travelled all over Greece making bells. Today, housed in an imposing traditional building on the “dimosia” (main road) of the hamlet, the famous School of Silversmithing and Goldsmithing, one of the most renowned jewellery schools in Greece, worthily continues the great local tradition. Here, the secrets and techniques of the old masters are reverently passed from generation to generation, giving a new perspective to 21st-century handmade jewellery. Of course, you will visit Stemnitsa for more than just the wonderful handmade jewellery. You will come to enjoy the picturesque village with its tower-houses, nestled among chestnut and plane trees, to taste delicious local delicacies in its tavernas, to enjoy views as far as the eye can see, and to live close to nature.
