A city linked to the history of Arcadia

Tripoli, the capital of Arcadia, is a city built on a plateau, at an elevation of 655 metres, and is surrounded by three mountain masses: Artemisio, Parthenio, and Mainalo. Although it is a gateway to some of the most beautiful mountain destinations in the country, the city itself often passes unnoticed.
Tripoli began to take shape in the early 14th century and until the late 19th century was known as Tripolitsa. For a short period, it was occupied by the Venetians, but flourished during the Ottoman period, when it evolved into the administrative centre of the Morias.
Its history was marked by the Greek Revolution. The city was an important nucleus of the Filiki Eteria (Society of Friends) and was completely destroyed three times: in 1770 during the Orlov Revolt, in 1821, and in 1828, when it burned for nine days. Its fate is inextricably linked with Theodoros Kolokotronis, the “Old Man of the Morias”, as the siege of Tripolitsa constituted a decisive moment in the revolutionary struggle.
Today, Tripoli is an administrative, economic, and commercial centre of the Peloponnese. Between charming apartment buildings with red roofs rise preserved neoclassical buildings, old mansions, fountains, and stone-built houses. Its centre is dominated by the impressive Areos Square, one of the largest and most beautiful squares in Greece. It is framed by pedestrian streets, cafés, and hangouts that give it a daily pulse.
Beyond the city extends Arcadia, the dreamlike land of bliss. Here, among the fir-covered mountains, the stone-carved villages, and the clear rivers, one truly understands the meaning of the Greek mountain landscape.
