Gaios

The colourful gateway to Paxos

Gaios, the capital and largest port of Paxos, is a settlement of rare beauty that has preserved its traditional identity intact. Arriving here is a special experience, as the boat passes through a narrow channel between two lush little islets, Panagia and Agios Nikolaos, which act as natural breakwaters.
As soon as you disembark, you are greeted by a scene full of colour, with impressive mansions and buildings topped with colourful tiled roofs, reflecting the island’s strong Venetian influences in architecture.
The heart of Gaios beats in its picturesque alleyways and kantounia, where everyday life unfolds among little shops selling local products and flower-filled courtyards.
A key landmark is the Paxos Folklore Museum, housed in a historic neoclassical building dating from 1906 on the waterfront. A walk through its rooms offers a rich journey into the island’s history. The exhibits range from prehistoric times to the daily life of the islanders during the 19th and 20th centuries, highlighting the area’s maritime and rural heritage.
The port of Gaios is the centre of social life, offering plenty of choices for dining and entertainment. From the marina, where fishing boats coexist harmoniously with sailing yachts, you can begin a seaside walk leading to the main square, an ideal spot to feel the pulse of the island.
The view towards the Castle of Agios Nikolaos, which dominates the islet opposite, completes the atmospheric image of the capital, making Gaios a destination that combines elegance with authentic island hospitality.
