A revival of profound significance
Vamvakou is a traditional village in Laconia, founded in the 15th century on the slopes of Mount Parnon. Nestled among chestnut, walnut, and fir trees at an altitude of approximately 900 metres, its modern history was marked by intense emigration—a fate shared by many Greek villages—leading to a dramatic population decline in recent decades.
Since 2018, however, Vamvakou has been experiencing a remarkable "restart". A group of young people with roots in the village founded the social cooperative enterprise "Vamvakou Revival", with the generous support and donation of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF), to breathe new life into the area. Notably, Vamvakou was the ancestral home of the families of both Stavros and Spyros Niarchos.
This initiative is multifaceted: beyond the operation of a café, restaurant, and guesthouse, the project has established hiking and cycling trails through the surrounding nature. It also organises cultural and educational programmes, workshops, diverse activities, and themed festivals, all while showcasing the natural wealth of Parnon.
The project has already attracted thousands of visitors and contributed to an increase in the permanent population, with ongoing actions that merge tradition with innovation. Vamvakou aspires to be more than just a place for hiking and relaxation; through its revival, it aims to become a model for the sustainable development of rural and mountainous communities across Greece.
