Haidou Forest

A journey into the pristine heart of the Rhodope Mountains

Set within the central Rhodope Mountains, the Haidou Forest offers an immersive experience into the most authentic face of the Greek landscape. Located approximately 55 km from Xanthi, it invites visitors to discover a sense of profound tranquillity beneath the shade of centuries-old trees.
Haidou is a rare biodiversity sanctuary, yet its true “gem” is the Tichla Forest. Designated a protected natural monument since 1980, this area is home to majestic beech trees reaching up to 30 metres in height, preserved untouched through the centuries. Beyond these iconic beeches, the forest ecosystem is enriched with towering pines, firs and spruces, while the ground is adorned with the rare yellow lily, found exclusively in the Rhodope Mountains.
Walking among these natural giants, you will feel the energy of one of Europe’s most unspoilt forest ecosystems, where flora and fauna coexist in undisturbed harmony, offering a safe haven to species such as the brown bear, the wolf and the graceful roe deer.
The highlight of your exploration is the Livaditis (or Trachoniou) Waterfall, where water cascades dramatically from a height of approximately 40 metres, creating an awe-inspiring atmosphere. The route to reach it is demanding, but if you are able, it is well worth the effort: a 2 km downhill hike through lush greenery leads to its base, while the return journey will test your endurance but reward you with unforgettable scenery.
Haidou invites you to leave behind the noise of everyday life and become part of the forest. Whether you are a hiking enthusiast or seeking a place of spiritual renewal, the trail to Livaditis and the views from the peaks of the Rhodope Mountains offer a rare sense of freedom.
