A Forest for Hiking and Mountain Adventures
The Menalon Forest stretches across the heart of Arcadia. Dense fir forests, clearings with panoramic vistas, stone bridges, and watermills create an environment perfect for both gentle and more demanding outdoor activities throughout the year.
The region is traversed by segments of the European Trail E4 and the National Trail O32, but the core of the experience is the Menalon Trail. This is a certified hiking network spanning approximately 75 km, divided into 8 distinct sections that connect 9 historic mountain settlements—from Vytina and Dimitsana to Stemnitsa and Elati.
The trail network is designed to offer a gradual immersion into the landscape: each section reveals different facets of Arcadian nature and the human presence throughout the ages. You can choose which path to follow based on your fitness level and the season. In spring and autumn, the forest is ideal for walking, while in winter, it is essential to check the weather and trail conditions beforehand. For organised activities or multi-day treks, the guidance of certified guides is recommended.
In winter, Mainalo is transformed into a premier destination for winter sports, thanks to the Menalon Ski Centre at Ostrakina, which features slopes for skiing and snowboarding. Visitors can also enjoy mountaineering, horse riding through the fir forest, and mountain biking along forest tracks. In the wider region, activities such as rafting and kayaking on the Lousios River are available, as well as mushroom-foraging excursions.
