Sounio National Park

A singular natural landscape around Sounio

Sounio National Park extends across Cape Sounio and the Temple of Poseidon, yet its essence lies beyond the monument. It is a landscape both wild and radiant, where the nature of south-eastern Attica reveals its most austere and authentic character. As you enter the park, the feel of the city quickly fades, replaced by low hills, rocky slopes, and the constant presence of the sea.
Established in 1974, the park covers approximately 3,500 hectares, making it one of Attica's most significant protected natural areas. Parts of the area fall within the Natura 2000 European network of protected areas.
The vegetation is typically Mediterranean: Aleppo pine, mastic trees, thyme, shrubs and aromatic plants thrive in the arid soil, filling the air with intense scents, particularly during the spring and summer months. If you move quietly, you will spot birds, reptiles and small mammals finding refuge in this protected environment.
The trails follow the natural contours of the land, guiding you through changing landscapes: from open slopes with views across the Aegean Sea to more enclosed sections with pine trees and dappled shade. As you walk around, you gain an appreciation for how the natural landscape has served as a backdrop to human presence for millennia. Ancient mines, traces of fortifications, and scattered ruins serve as a reminder that this place has never been isolated from history.
In many places, the view opens up towards the sea. The coastline is rugged and dramatic, with the light constantly shifting across the rocks and water. It is easy to understand why Sounio was considered a place of boundaries: here the land ends and the open sea begins, and this feeling accompanies every step you take through the park.
