Rhodope Mountain Range National Park

A living mosaic of biodiversity

The Rhodope Mountain Range National Park stretches across a vast area reaching the border with Bulgaria and represents an ecosystem of outstanding ecological value. Its geographical position and relative isolation have allowed rare species to thrive, with its fauna including notable animals such as the brown bear, wolf, wild goat and the rare jackal. Overhead, impressive birds such as the golden eagle and the black stork soar through the skies, while its forests mark the northernmost range for many Mediterranean plant species, forming a living laboratory of nature protected under the Natura 2000 network.
At the heart of the mountain range lie forests of fir, spruce and beech, with the most emblematic being the Frakto Virgin Forest, designated a Protected Natural Monument due to the absence of human intervention for centuries. Water is a constant presence throughout the landscape, with the Nestos River and Despatis River creating wetlands and gorges of exceptional beauty. Particularly notable are the forests of Haidou and Elatia (Kara Dere), where towering spruces reach heights of up to 50 metres.
The region is also associated with the mythical Orpheus, who, according to ancient tradition, originated from Thrace. Along the fringes and within the mountain range, you will encounter scattered stone arched bridges and the remains of old settlements, bearing witness to the long-standing coexistence of humans with the mountainous environment. The present-day inhabitants of the mountain villages continue traditional activities such as livestock farming and logging, offering an authentic glimpse into rural life in Thrace.
The fortifications of the Metaxas Line located within the park’s boundaries add a further layer of interest, making the mountain range a destination that combines ecological richness with historical depth.
