Agios Ioannis at Kastri

A chapel like a film set

On the northern coast of Skopelos lies the enchanting chapel of Agios Ioannis at Kastri. Built on an imposing cliff, about 100 meters above the sea, it combines austere Orthodox architecture with the dramatic natural landscape.
The small chapel is dedicated to St John the Baptist and it exudes tranquillity and respect, attracting both pilgrims and nature lovers.
The ascent to get there consists of about 100 steps carved into the rock. Carefully climb to the top and you will be rewarded by the view. Each step offers a unique image of the windswept shores and the Aegean Sea.
The site’s reputation exploded worldwide in 2008, when it became the filming location of the iconic wedding scene in Mamma Mia!, with Meryl Streep singing The Winner Takes it All on the steps. Since then, the chapel of Agios Ioannis has become an international symbol of the island, attracting thousands of visitors who wish to experience its enchanting nature. It is a popular wedding and photo shoot location, while most visitors simply take a moment to stand there and take in the magnificent view.
At the foot of the cliff is the beach of Agios Ioannis, with crystal clear waters, ideal for swimming before or after the ascent. A little further along, you will find Agios Ioannis Cave, while the area’s coves offer tranquillity and incomparable natural beauty.
