A historic church with a unique artistic tradition
The Church of Saint Nicholas is one of the most famous and historic churches in Nafplio, with a long-standing presence in the city's spiritual life. It is a flat-roofed basilica, completed in 1836, and is renowned for its exquisite wood-carved iconostasis and pulpit.
The church's architecture and decorative elements reflect Byzantine and post-Byzantine influences, while its interior is distinguished by an austere magnificence and an atmosphere of profound devotion.
Of particular artistic value are the episcopal throne, the central Russian-style chandelier, and the large icons on the iconostasis, which were painted between 1848 and 1849 by the famed hagiographer Ioannis Dimadis. The façade and the bell towers are more recent additions.
Combine your visit to Saint Nicholas with a stroll through the stone-paved alleys of Nafplio’s Old Town and a stop at Syntagma Square. The feast of Aghios Nikolaos is celebrated with great splendour on 6 December, featuring a procession of the Saint’s miraculous icon and a portion of his holy relics kept within the church.
