Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos in Kalabaka

A monument that bridges faith and history

The Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos (Virgin Mary) in Kalabaka is one of the most important monuments of Byzantine and post-Byzantine art in Greece. A visit here is a unique experience, as it combines spiritual beauty and historical atmosphere.
Construction on the church, also known as the Cathedral of the Bishopric of Stagi, began in the 10th or early 11th century, atop the ruins of an Early Christian church. At the same spot stood an ancient Greek temple dedicated to Apollo, which adds to the importance of the monument, as it highlights the continuity and alternation of religions and cultures in the Greek area.
The murals of the church are works of great value. The southern aisle features scenes dating back to the 12th century, while the rest of the painted decorations date back to around 1573, and are the work of the priest Kyriazis and Neofytos, son of the painter Theofanis. A striking element is the marble pulpit, the only such extant example, which was reconstructed using pieces of the pulpit of the Early Christian basilica.
Additionally, the northern wall of the inner narthex is where important documents are kept, attesting to the historical and administrative importance of the church as the seat of a Bishopric: the chrysobull of Emperor Andronicus III (an imperial decree with a golden seal) dating back to 1336 and the sigillion of Patriarch Arsenios (a patriarchal document confirming the rights of the Bishopric) dating back to 1393.
The church boasts impressive aesthetics thanks to the harmonious combination of stone, marble, icons and sculptures. These elements transform the space into a living ark of Byzantine history, which uniquely recounts the journey of time and faith.
Visitors can feel the unique energy of the Church and embark on a mental voyage to eras past. Discover the Church of the Dormition in Kalabaka, experience the greatness of history, admire the art and let the light of this space take you on a journey where past and present meet harmoniously.
