Mushrooms

The Precious Treasures of the Mountains and Plains

In the fir forests, alpine landscapes, and riverside areas of Greece, hundreds of species of wild mushrooms grow each year. Of the 2,200 known species in Greece, only 150 are edible. Greek wild mushrooms are a healthy food, rich in high-quality proteins, minerals, and trace elements, while simultaneously offering remarkable culinary experiences.
The Mushroom Region of Grevena
Western Macedonia, and Grevena in particular, is the heartland of Greek mushrooms. The locals of Grevena, as experienced mushroom hunters, have transformed the area into a magnet for visitors from all over the world. Rare species, unique to Europe, can be found there, and organised associations introduce travellers to their magical world through guided forest walks.
The Most Notable Varieties

  •         True Morels: The queen of mushrooms, with a conical shape. Its aroma evokes foie gras and its exquisite flavour elevates soups, sauces, and seafood dishes.

  •         Chanterelle: This orange-yellow trumpet impresses with its fruity aroma. It pairs perfectly with poultry or can even be used to create a delicious spoon sweet.

  •         Horn of Plenty: This black trumpet with its floral aroma and smoky flavour pairs exquisitely with game dishes.

  •         Caesar’s Mushroom: The so-called rooster’s egg, with its divine seafood flavour, has been celebrated since antiquity
