The epitome of summer idleness

In the centre of the Small Cyclades, south of Naxos and north-east of Iraklia, lies the popular Schinoussa. Enchanting sunsets, welcoming bays, doll-like hamlets, and golden sands compose this lilliputian Cycladic island with its carefree life that is “disrupted” only by its famous panigyria (festivals). Here, cars are considered an unnecessary luxury, as the island extends over just 9 sq.km., which you can explore on foot.
With three hamlets, Schinoussa promises peace and serenity. The picturesque Chora sprawls protectively over a hill and offers a magnificent view from above, with its characteristic Cycladic houses smothered in basil and bougainvilleas. Sheltered Mersini, once a pirate hideout according to local tradition, is considered today one of the safest shelters for small boats in the entire Aegean. Tiny Mesaria is surrounded by fertile gardens and small vineyards, with an unpretentious beauty and simplicity.
Here you can sample perhaps the best fava beans in the world, enjoy traditional delicacies in the island’s cafés and tavernas, dive into deep blue waters, and lounge on the beach under a tamarisk tree. You will see donkeys passing by and locals calling you over to treat you to a sweet. You will revel wholeheartedly at one of the island’s famous festivals. You will feel the meaning of summer idleness and relax to your core, vowing to return soon.
