Itea is a tranquil town on the northern shores of the Corinthian Gulf. It is situated between the sea and the vast olive groves of Amfissa, with the mountain ranges of Giona and Parnassus as a backdrop. In antiquity, nearby Kirra – located in close proximity to Itea – served as the port of Delphi, and one can imagine pilgrims ascending from here to the mountain to honour the god Apollo or consult the oracle. Many centuries later, in 1827, the important naval battle of Agali took place in the area, contributing to the liberation of Central Greece from the Turks. Itea was founded a little later, in 1830, and was named after a willow (itia) that was located in the area. It features straight roads that will lead you directly to the tranquil beach with its fish tavernas and views of the mountains of the Peloponnese. Tree-lined squares, imposing mountains rising all around, and a beautiful harbour form a relaxed and simple backdrop.
