A well-hidden secret

Nestled amidst lush greenery, Livadia is built at the foot of Mount Helikon, the mountain of the Muses and poetic inspiration, according to mythology. Its history dates back to antiquity, when it was known for the Oracle of Trophonius and was a sacred place for the Boeotians.
The city has known many conquerors over the centuries. Venetians, Catalans, and Ottomans have left their mark here. During the Ottoman period, it served as an important administrative centre of Rumelia and was one of the first cities to rebel during the Greek War of Independence of 1821, with Athanasios Diakos inextricably linking his name to the region.
Water is the dominant element here, as the Erkyna river crosses the city. The springs of Krya, in the southern part of the city, create an idyllic setting with flowing waters, small waterfalls, stone bridges, and old watermills, a unique place where nature and human craftsmanship coexist.
Old industrial buildings, reminiscent of the era when Livadia was an important commercial centre, primarily for cotton production, have been renovated and truly embellish the city. The clock tower, the marketplace mosque that stands in ruins, the old neoclassical school, and the medieval castle that proudly overlooks the area from above, complete the scene.
The surrounding area boasts picturesque villages, important archaeological and historical monuments, and the imposing massifs of Mt Parnassus and Mt Helicon inviting you to explore the natural beauty of Boeotia. The renowned souvlakia of Livadia will be an unforgettable experience.
