History, culture, sea and unique natural landscapes

Built amphitheatrically on a pine-covered slope at the edge of the Corinthian Gulf, Nafpaktos is a beautiful town, famous for a legendary naval battle: it was here that the Turkish fleet was destroyed by united European forces in October 1571. Miguel de Cervantes, the author of Don Quixote, took part in the battle as a soldier on a Spanish ship, where he actually suffered a serious injury to his left hand. The Battle of Lepanto constitutes one of the most significant naval confrontations of the era, which determined the course of the Mediterranean.
Today, Nafpaktos stands out for its picturesque harbour, where traditional fishing boats and modern vessels coexist harmoniously. The cobbled streets, neoclassical houses and stone-paved alleys lend the town a charm that combines the past with the vitality of today. On the hill surrounding the town, the Venetian castle is visible through the pines — a masterpiece of fortification art offering a panoramic view of the Corinthian Gulf and the surrounding region.
Nafpaktos is an ideal choice for a visit throughout the year. The re-enactment of the naval battle in October attracts many visitors, alongside artistic, cultural and sporting events. During Easter, the procession of the town's two epitaphs constitutes a unique spectacle with fires lit all around the harbour.
In the surrounding area, you will see natural landscapes of unique beauty. The crystal-clear beaches of the lowlands are complemented by picturesque small villages in the highlands, set among tall mountains with rivers, lakes and winding roads leading to enchanting spots.
