The City of Waterfalls

Edessa is located in Western Macedonia, at the foot of Mount Vermio, in a strategic location between fertile plains and mountainous terrain. The city’s character was shaped early on by its abundant water sources, with springs and streams criss-crossing the area, earning it the moniker “the city of waters”.
Edessa’s history spans approximately three thousand years. In antiquity, it was associated with the Macedonian dynasty and the land that gave birth to Alexander the Great Later, it became known as Vodena, which also means “city of waters”. Harnessing the power of the waters that flow through the city led to Edessa experiencing significant prosperity as an industrial centre in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Today, Edessa is a modern city awash with verdant landscapes. Its impressive waterfalls, the city’s hallmark, cascade literally at the edge of the urban centre, framed by neighbourhoods showcasing Macedonian architecture and Byzantine churches.

In the surrounding area rises Mount Vermio with its forests and trails, the fertile plains of Pella, and the nearby villages. Together, they create a harmonious and authentic destination where nature meets history, crafting landscapes of captivating beauty.
