The city of water

Drama is situated in a verdant area, where water features prominently, at the foot of the imposing Mount Falakro, which the locals call the mountain of flowers.
Drama has been known since antiquity and during the Byzantine era it was a fortified town with a castle. In the late 19th century, the production and trade of tobacco, the operation of the railway beginning in 1895, and the easy access to the port of Kavala brought about a period of prosperity that is evident in the city to this day.
This beautiful and welcoming city boasts picturesque neighbourhoods, spacious squares, green spaces, neoclassical mansions, and numerous monuments scattered throughout its urban fabric, seamlessly blending the old with the new. In antiquity, the region was associated with the worship of Dionysus, a legacy reflected in its long-standing viticultural tradition. Dotted with vineyards, it produces wines that are renowned throughout Greece, while Dionysian customs continue to be observed in the region's villages.
Surrounded by stunning natural beauty, with mountains, rivers, forests, and plains, Drama is a city brimming with vibrancy and cultural events. The renowned Drama International Short Film Festival, established in 1978, draws creators and audiences from across Greece and abroad to the city every autumn.
