A city bursting with memories

Nestled at the foot of Mount Vermio, with the Tripotamos river flowing through it, Veria is a city immersed in nature, where history permeates nearly every street.
Veria has been particularly important since antiquity and Paul the Apostle taught here. It was one of the most important cities of the Byzantine Empire. The impressively large number of Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches, exceeding 70, stands as an undeniable testament to its prosperity. Today, 48 of these churches remain, boasting exquisite frescoes.
Modern Veria preserves its historic neighbourhoods intact and many of its significant monuments. Notable examples include the traditional quarter of Panagia Dexia, with its stately homes and picturesque alleys along the Tripotamos river, and the Jewish quarter of Barbouta, one of the most important Jewish complexes in the world. It is dominated by the old Jewish synagogue of 1850, the oldest in northern Greece.
Behind Veria lies Mount Vermio, an impressive mountain with stunning natural beauty and picturesque villages. Nearby is Vergina, the land of the Macedonian kings and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
