The historic gateway to Mani

“And there ahead of us, half castellated and with its roofs topped by a tower or two and the cupola and belfry of a little cathedral — lay the capital of the Deep Mani...” This is how Areopoli is introduced by British writer Patrick Leigh Fermor, who was inspired by and lived in Mani.
Built almost entirely of stone, Areopoli stands picturesque and proud on a hill overlooking the surrounding wild and rocky land. Tower houses and traditional stone mansions blend harmoniously with the landscape. Narrow streets with hidden courtyards seem to whisper ancient stories. Here, in Taxiarchon Square, the first flag of the Greek Revolution was raised on 17 March 1821.
Areopoli is the gateway to Mani, one of the most unique regions of the Peloponnese. Its history unfolds like a thread, from village to village, among wildly beautiful coves, peaceful beaches and caves. The locals are known for their devotion to family and for their pride. Their past is full of legends of struggles and heroism.
Areopoli and Mani offer an atmospheric journey through time, in a land where the simplicity of the landscape blends harmoniously with tradition.
