In the heart of mountainous Arcadia, perched at an altitude of 946 metres, Dimitsana seems to brush against the clouds. The village is built amphitheatrically, with tall stone mansions in full harmony with the landscape, offering unrestricted views. A historic and heroic land, Dimitsana is one of the most beautiful and popular villages in the Peloponnese. Its history is centuries-long. In antiquity, the city of Teuthis was located here, while it has been referred to by its current name since the 10th century. The high mountains and isolated geographical location protected the hamlet during the years of Ottoman rule and allowed it to grow. The exploitation of the abundant waters through hydro-power was a driving force for the local economy: flour mills, fulling mills, and tanneries contributed to the flourishing and prosperity of the region. Dimitsana played a decisive role during the Greek War of Independence, as fourteen water-powered gunpowder mills produced up to 500kg of gunpowder daily, continuously supplying the fighters. Thus, it is rightly called the powder store of the Revolution. Today, the place exudes tranquillity and harmony within a landscape filled with fir trees and stone. Picturesque mansions, narrow cobblestone streets, Byzantine churches, and monuments bear witness to its glorious past, composing a charming setting. At the foot of Dimitsana flows the mythical Lousios River, in a landscape of exceptional natural beauty that is ideal for walking and outdoor activities.
