Built amphitheatrically on a pine-covered promontory, the coastal town of Ermioni gazes out over the turquoise waters of the Argolic Gulf. Narrow cobbled streets, stone-carved houses with courtyards full of geraniums, idyllic shores, and seaside fish tavernas lend an island aura to Ermioni, despite the town being part of the Peloponnese. It is a place with a long history. According to tradition, it was founded by the hero Hermion, son of Europs, and experienced great prosperity as early as the Mycenaean era. Scattered ancient remains throughout the town bear witness to its history. Today, locals are involved in fishing and agricultural production, with its high-quality olive oil and famous pomegranates being particularly renowned. The harbour of Ermioni teems with life, full of caiques, sailing boats, and small vessels swaying gently in the water. Just a few metres away lies Bisti, the characteristic peninsula which is ideal for afternoon walks. In the summer, the town comes alive with cultural events, festivals, and local traditions that honour its maritime heritage. In winter, it is worth visiting for Epiphany to experience the “yala-yala” custom first-hand, where young men dressed in sailor suits wander through the town singing before boarding decorated boats and jumping into the sea to catch a cross tossed by a priest. With exceptional cuisine and unpretentious beauty, Ermioni combines simplicity, serenity, and aristocratic finesse.
