Land the gods

Built amphitheatrically on the edges of the Laconian Gulf, Gythio is the maritime gateway to Mani.  With a strong historical identity and a relaxed island vibe, it is a city that harmoniously combines the landscape of Mani with a certain urban nobility. Colourful houses perched on the hill, a picturesque harbour full of caiques (traditional fishing boats) and a sense of constant motion welcome you upon arrival.
The history of Gythio is lost in centuries past. Its name is interpreted as "land of the gods" and in antiquity it was the seaport of neighbouring Sparta. Myth would have it that this is where Paris and Helen of Troy departed for Troy. In modern times, Gythio developed into an important commercial and naval centre, with many neoclassical buildings and monuments still bearing witness to its heyday.
The city's trademark is the small island of Kranai or Marathonisi, which is now connected to the mainland by a stone-paved causeway. One of the most impressive stone lighthouses in Greece stands tall there, near Tzanetakis Tower, a reminder of the heroic past of Mani – especially during the Greek War of Independence. The view of the harbour and the sunset is enchanting.
Gythio is ideal for relaxed strolls along the waterfront, walks through the town's alleys, and stops at small tavernas that serve fresh fish and Maniot flavours. Long sandy beaches stretch out a short distance away, while if you continue south, the peninsula of Mani is one of the most enchanting parts of the Peloponnese.
