At the crossroads of nature and modern life

Kalamata, the capital and central port of Messinia, reveals itself at the head of the Messinian Gulf. The shadow of Mount Taygetus, the vast silver-green olive groves that brush against the coast, and an endless beach paint this charismatic city with the most beautiful colours. After liberation from the Turks, it developed into a wealthy urban centre and an important port, thanks to the products of the fertile Messinian land, such as olive oil, raisins, and figs.
The point of reference of this charming city is the legendary ‘Castle of Isabeau’, which comes to life every summer thanks to the prestigious Kalamata International Dance Festival. Beautiful Old Town sprawls out around it, a favourite meeting place for young people, as much of the nightlife is located here.
One of Kalamata’s charms is the vast, 2.5km-long serviced beach, with calm, crystal-clear waters.  The seafront extends along Navarinou Avenue and is one of the most beautiful spots in the city for a stroll, a bicycle ride or a refreshing dip. On the western beach lies the marina and the city’s port, with many tourist facilities, cafés, and restaurants.
Fertile plains and imposing mountains, sprawling beaches and pebbled coves, proud villages and Byzantine churches harmoniously blend in with the region surrounding the Messinian capital, composing an idyllic destination for every season of the year.
