Mountain, fir trees, snow and history

Kalavryta spreads across the foothills of Mount Helmos in the north of the Peloponnese, within a mountainous setting dominated by the green of nature and the white of snow. It is a small town that teems with life mainly during the winter months, thanks to its modern ski resort.
In Kalavryta you will encounter a picturesque landscape with stone-carved houses, small squares, traditional cafés and tavernas next to shady plane trees. Along the central pedestrian street, small shops offer local products such as chylopites (pasta), honey, herbs and the region's traditional cheeses.
In spring, nature is in full bloom and the surrounding routes are filled with colours and scents. In summer, the plane trees provide a cool respite even on the hottest days, while in autumn the scenery changes as leaves dress the streets in shades of red and yellow. Naturally, Kalavryta acquires a special vitality in winter, as its ski resort is one of the most popular and modern in Greece, located a short distance from Athens.
In the town's central church, the clock on the bell tower always points to 02:34. This is the hour when time stood still on 13 December 1943, when, during World War II, the German occupiers executed the entire male population of the town, approximately 677 people. The clock stands to this day as a silent and undeniable witness to one of the darkest moments in the history of the land.
The town's trademark is the famous “Odontotos”, the historic rack railway inaugurated in 1896 which connects Kalavryta with Diakofto on the Corinthian Gulf, covering a route of 22 kilometres through the enchanting Vouraikos Gorge. The picturesque railway station stands at the entrance of the town next to a huge plane tree that spreads its shade over the small square, reminiscent of a scene from an old film.
