Volcanic terrain and a tradition of thermal springs
The area is one of the Saronic Gulf's oldest spa destinations. The spa town flourished from the late 19th century, coinciding with the systematic development of its renowned thermal springs, alongside notable tourist infrastructure.
Its name derives from methane, an element inextricably bound to the region's intense volcanic activity. The ancient traveller Pausanias notably describes the volcano's eruption and the emergence of therapeutic mineral waters in the early 3rd century BC, confirming the site's enduring significance.
Today, Methana blends nature's therapeutic power with pristine seas and abundant fish by the shore. It is a destination unknown to many, where history, land, and water co-exist harmoniously.
