The first capital of the modern Greek state

At the head of the Argolic Gulf, in a naturally fortified position, lies one of the most beautiful cities in Greece, Nafplio. It served as the first capital of the newly established Greek state from 1827 to 1834 and possesses a history that is lost in the depths of time.
The city was conquered by many and they all left marks that are clearly visible to this day throughout its neighbourhoods: Franks, Venetians, and Turks bestowed glamour upon Nafplio and made it one of the most important cities of the Peloponnese. Ancient walls, medieval castles, monuments, statues, Ottoman fountains, and Venetian and neoclassical buildings compose a city of inexhaustible charm.
Palamidi, an imposing castle, stands tall at the highest point. Carved into the slope, it offers a panoramic view of the sea and the red roofs of the city. A little lower, crowning the old town, spreads the peninsula of Akronafplia, also known by its Turkish name, Its Kale.
At the foot of the two castles stands Anapli, the old town with stone-paved narrow streets, blooming bougainvilleas overflowing from balconies and courtyards, and elegant, well-preserved mansions. However, Nafplio also has a modern city, with neoclassical buildings, parks, and squares that compose a beautiful destination.
Much-photographed Bourtzi, a fortress built on the islet of Agioi Theodoroi, just off the coast of the city, remains its trademark. In the past, under the Venetians, a huge chain connected it to Akronafplia, closing off and protecting the city from enemy ships.
Today, Nafplio, colourful and timelessly captivating, generously offers romance and a journey through the modern history of Greece.
