The birthplace of the Olympic Games

In the western Peloponnese, in an area of peerless natural beauty, lies ancient Olympia, where the great sanctuary of Zeus flourished. This is the birthplace of the Olympic Games, the top athletic event of antiquity, which united Greeks from every corner of the then known world. During the games, all hostilities ceased, giving athletes and spectators the opportunity to co-exist at a unique Panhellenic event, a celebration that lasted five days and was held every four years.
The ruins of temples, the gymnasium and the stadium, the palaestra and other buildings that bear witness to the brilliance of ancient Greek architecture and religious life are preserved at the archaeological site. The gold-and-ivory statue of Zeus, a work by the famous sculptor Phidias and one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, no longer exists, but the magic of the site remains indelible.
Today, Olympia remains a living link between the past and the present. This is the very place where the flame of the modern Olympic Games is lit, travelling to the city that hosts each respective event. The ancient Olympic Games inspire and illuminate the modern event, conveying a message of peace, friendship, and athletic spirit from antiquity to the heart of the present.
