Between the pine trees and the sea of the Corinthian Gulf
Xylokastro is a popular resort in northern Peloponnese. Built next to the sea, on the beautiful coastline of the Corinthian Gulf, it offers views of the high mountains of mainland Greece and stands poised between the blue of the sea and the green of the pine trees that cover its shores. The beauty of its nature has made it a well-known tourist destination for kings and other prominent international figures since 1916. It served as a source of inspiration and a sanctuary for the great Greek poet Angelos Sikelianos, who, together with his American wife, built an idyllic villa in the pine forest of Pefkias, which stretches across the heart of Xylokastro. Many writers and people of the arts and letters of the 20th century were guests here, such as Nikos Kazantzakis. This was also the venue for many celebrations dedicated to art and poetry. Despite Xylokastro deriving its name from a wooden barracks located in the area during the Venetian period, the modern town consists primarily of new buildings. Tavernas, restaurants, and cafés stretch out before the sea, creating a delightful promenade that is perfect for leisurely walks or cycling. The superb beaches of the area are a major advantage of Xylokastro, while the surrounding mountains and mountain villages offer opportunities for wonderful excursions inland. Its proximity to important attractions of the Peloponnese, as well as to hidden local treasures, makes Xylokastro an ideal destination throughout the year.
