The high priestess of the Cyclades

Delos, a treasure trove of history, gently floats on the Aegean Sea, just a few miles from the cosmopolitan island of Mykonos. A UNESCO World Heritage site, Delos is the high priestess of the Cyclades, the birthplace of the immortals. The Cyclades owe their name to Delos, around which they are arranged in a circular pattern.
In ancient times, the myth of the birth of Apollo and Artemis consecrated the island: no mortal would be permitted to be born on its soil, and, as it was the cradle of immortals, no mortal was permitted to die there either. Thus, apart from its importance as a religious and economic centre, the island retained a certain exclusivity: even during the great flourishing of the Delian League, women about to give birth, as well as those who appeared to be nearing the end of their lives, were sent to the neighbouring island of Rineia. The entire known world recognised the sacredness of the island and acknowledged its uniqueness.
Today, Delos boasts something truly unique: nowhere else can you find such a vast natural insular archaeological site of such significance. No other island in Greece is home to so many monumental relics from the Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic periods, spanning the centuries of great Greek art, within an area used exclusively as an archaeological site.
Those who visit Delos from surrounding islands experience something that goes beyond a simple visit to an archaeological site. The landscape and monuments maintain an atmosphere that evokes the timeless sacredness of the island. In a symbolic but meaningful way, the historical uniqueness of the place still holds true: here, no one is born and no one dies.
