Charmingly simple

Located between Tzia and Serifos, Kythnos is one of the Cycladic islands closest to Attica, yet it has not experienced the same level of publicity as its neighbours. It is a low-profile island that does not seek attention, but earns it quietly, thanks to its genuine and authentic beauty.
The history of Kythnos stretches back over 100 centuries, as traces have been found that attest to human presence there dating back 10,000 years. In antiquity, it was renowned for its good governance, to the extent that Aristotle dedicated a special study to it. It was inhabited by the Dryopes, it flourished during the classical period, and it participated in the legendary naval battle of Salamis with one trireme.
The landscape is quintessentially Cycladic: bare, arid hills, with endless dry-stone walls and hundreds of white chapels scattered about. The villages of Kythnos, with their paved streets, whitewashed houses, squares, and windmills, are simple and unadorned. Hora, built amphitheatrically, is one of the most charming Cycladic settlements, while Loutra is home to the only thermal springs in the Cyclades.
Follow the trails that connect the villages, taste apricots and wild berries, and listen to the wind. With its mild tourist development and idyllic natural landscape, Kythnos is a destination of serenity, authentic, simple, and welcoming.
