The homeland of mastic

Chios, the fifth-largest Greek island, lies just off the coast of Asia Minor, south of Lesbos, and is renowned for its unique colours and fragrances.
The island’s most celebrated product is its exquisite mastic, which flourishes solely in Chios and nowhere else on earth. It has been cultivated here since the time of Homer, specifically only in the south of the island, and is a Protected Designation of Origin product. Even today, all tasks —from harvesting the resinous sap to cleaning and processing— are carried out by hand. Moreover, it is now used in the pharmaceutical, surgical, dental and cosmetic industries.
Chios has been inhabited since the Neolithic era and lays claim to being the birthplace of the epic poet Homer. Saracen pirates, Genoese and Ottomans have all passed through the island, leaving their indelible mark on the landscape: watchtowers and fortresses stand scattered across the island, coexisting with exquisite monasteries and unique medieval hamlets.
Chios has been lavishly endowed by nature with numerous magnificent beaches, soaring mountains, orange groves, ravines and meadows that, in springtime, burst into bloom with beautiful tulips, known locally as “lalades”.
