A crossroads of history and nature

Lamia is situated in a key location on mainland Greece, between Thessaly and southern Greece. It is built at the foot of Mount Othrys and near the Spercheios river. From antiquity to more modern times, its strategic location has made it a site of transit, conflict, and important historical developments.
In antiquity, a city flourished here, experiencing periods of prosperity, conquest, and transformation. During the Byzantine and medieval periods it was known as Zitouni, then changed hands between the Franks, Catalans, and Ottomans, who left their mark, primarily on the castle. During the Greek War of Independence, the region once again became a battleground, with the Battle of Alamana in 1821 and the sacrifice of Athanasios Diakos being particularly well-known.
Beyond its history, Lamia is surrounded by a rich natural environment. The fertile plain of Spercheios and nearby Mount Oiti create ideal conditions for excursions into nature. Throughout the region, there are renowned thermal springs, such as Ypati, Thermopylae, and Kamena Vourla, which have been famous since antiquity for their beneficial properties and are closely linked to the identity of the area.
Today, with its large squares, paved narrow streets, and the castle crowning it, Lamia remains a vibrant city, a bridge between north and south, between the mountain and the sea, with exceptional cuisine and welcoming people.
