Nestled amphitheatrically within a wooded area below the pass of Katara, Metsovo, this rugged part of the Pindus massif, steadfastly preserves its traditional character. A quintessential mountain hamlet, it is filled with life throughout the year and generously offers visitors more beauty than any comparable destination.
During the winter months, the renowned Vlach village – the birthplace of prominent national benefactors such as Tositsas (Tossizza), Stournaras, and Averoff – is a constant in Epirus tourism. Half-hidden in the mist or enveloped in a white blanket of snow, it resembles a painting that invites us to enjoy it with all our senses.
The heart of the hamlet is its central square, one of the most famous in mountainous Greece. Around the courtyard, shaded by towering plane trees, you will see a distinctive Metsovo scene: elderly men with handlebar moustaches, traditional attire, and wooden shepherd’s crooks, conversing in Vlach, enjoying the first light of day.
The gastronomic identity of Metsovo comes alive in the square, with spits-roasts, kokoretsi (seasoned lamb offal wrapped in intestines), sausages, and loads of pies. At the same time, the surrounding shops offer the culinary treasures of the region: local products, sweets, and the renowned Metsovone and Metsovela cheeses.
Surrounding the village, vast forested mountains, three rivers, and an artificial lake offer opportunities for hiking, mountaineering, mountain biking, off-road excursions with 4x4 vehicles, kayaking, rafting, and skiing at the region's ski resorts.
