An authentic mountain experience in Epirus

Nestled amidst the towering peaks of the Pindus mountain range in Epirus, the Zagorochoria (villages of Zagori) are secreted away in forests of pine and fir. They represent one of the most authentic and well-preserved mountain destinations in Greece, spread across the mountains of Pindus, Tymfi and Mitsikeli.
This is a cluster of traditional hamlets, perched at elevations often exceeding 1,000 metres, all characterised by stone construction, minimalist architecture, and a seamless integration with the natural landscape.
The villages, with their cobbled streets and imposing mansions, are connected by elaborate stone bridges that span rivers and ravines, a hallmark of Zagorian architecture. Many Zagori villages were the birthplaces of national benefactors, scholars and artists, and they maintain a long tradition of education.
The Vikos-Aoös National Park plays a central role in the landscape, with the impressive Vikos Gorge, one of the deepest in the world, the sources of the Voidomatis River and the pristine forests of Tymfi. The Zagori region is an ideal destination for hiking, mountaineering, cycling and mountain activities, with trails connecting villages and stunning natural sites.

Intercity KTEL buses connect Zagori with Ioannina. Travelers can take a bus from Ioannina to towns such as Papigo, Monodendri, and Vikos, with travel times ranging from 30 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on the village. Long-distance buses from Athens or Thessaloniki connect first to Ioannina.
