The Epirot city of legends

In the heart of Epirus, the city of Ioannina sprawls around the enchanting Lake Pamvotis. The nature, climate, and character of the city are defined by this marine "lady" which, with its still waters and small island, constitutes a natural monument around which the entire city lives and breathes.
The history of Ioannina is long and multifaceted. It was once a multicultural territory, a place where Christian, Islamic, and Jewish elements coexisted. During the Ottoman period, it was ruled by Ali Pasha, a controversial yet charismatic figure: a ruthless leader and, at the same time, a visionary politician. Under his reign, Ioannina experienced great prosperity and evolved into a major commercial and intellectual centre, rich in goldsmithing, textiles, and cultural exchanges with the West.
Wandering through the historic centre and the city's museums feels like a journey through time. Remarkable buildings, such as Matei Mansion, the Ottoman Mosque of Veli Pasha, and the cobbled streets of the Castle, narrate centuries-old stories. Here, every corner hides a legend, from the tragedy of Lady Frosyni to the tales of Ali Pasha and the island in the lake.
The city is renowned throughout Greece for its silversmithing and goldsmithing, as well as for its renowned syrupy desserts, such as Ioannina-style baklava, which will captivate you! Here, customs and traditions keep centuries-old practices alive. Every Carnival, the "Tzamales", a three-day festival of bonfires with music, dancing, and bean soup, are revived in the city's neighbourhoods!
Today, Ioannina is a vibrant modern university city, with cafés, bars, and cultural events breathing life into every corner of the city. Surrender to its magic and be transported to a dreamlike place.
