The legendary bridge and the landscape of Epirus

Arta is situated in Epirus, on the banks of the Arachthos river, and it is a city with a long history and a distinctive identity. Known throughout Greece for its legendary bridge, it blends the mountainous landscape with the aquatic element, and its history with its vibrant present.
In antiquity, it was called Ambracia, an important centre of the ancient Greek world and capital of the kingdom of Pyrrhus. It experienced great prosperity during the Middle Ages, as it served as the capital of the Despotate of Epirus, a fact that left a strong mark on the architecture and monuments of the city. Its renowned Byzantine churches are among the most important monuments in Greece.
Today, Arta is a city with a vibrant student population and a rich cultural scene. Traditional flavours, local products, and the hospitality of the locals complement the experience, making it a destination worth exploring in depth.
The area around Arta combines natural landscapes and historical monuments. The hills and mountains surrounding the city provide shelter in dense forests of beech, chestnut, and pine, while gorges and small waterfalls offer points of natural beauty for hiking and exploring. Picturesque villages preserve the traditions of Epirus, while monasteries, convents, churches, and small castles bear witness to its long and turbulent history.
