An island-like city on the Ambracian Gulf

Preveza, a city built on a peninsula at the entrance to the Ambracian Gulf, is almost entirely surrounded by the sea. Its name likely means “passage” in Slavic, a fitting description given its pivotal location on the map of western Greece.
Preveza lies near the site of ancient Berenice, founded by Pyrrhus, King of Epirus, in 290 BC. Nearby stretches the promontory of Actium, where one of antiquity's most significant naval battles took place, as Mark Antony and Octavian clashed for control of Rome. Mark Antony's defeat led both him and Cleopatra to suicide.
The present-day city took shape in the late 11th century, following the decline of the significant neighbouring city of Nicopolis. Byzantines, Venetians, and Ottomans indelibly marked its urban fabric and monuments. Today, Preveza stands out for its vibrant waterfront promenade, the sailing boats lending it a cosmopolitan air, its picturesque narrow streets, and its rich culinary tradition
The wider region boasts verdant landscapes, enchanting beaches, and wetlands of rare ecological significance, interspersed with castles, monasteries, and notable archaeological sites, forming a truly captivating mosaic.
