Landscape in the mist

At the north-western tip of Greece, among mountains, valleys, and lakes, lies the misty city of Florina, one of the coldest places in the country. With red-roofed houses, forgotten mansions, and a river running through it, Florina combines the glamour of yesteryear with the vibrant hangouts of the present, constituting a poetic place full of contrasts.
A communication hub between the mountainous and lowland areas of Western Macedonia, it has always been an important strategic location and has remained inhabited since antiquity. Under the Ottomans, it flourished as a commercial and craft centre. It experienced intense cultural development around 1893, when its railway connection with Thessaloniki was established. This is wonderfully reflected in the eclecticist buildings of the early 20th century that line the Sakoulevas River in the city centre.
Florina was the “muse” of the great Greek director Theo Angelopoulos, who filmed seven movies here. Perhaps he was inspired by what locals call "siniaki", a frozen mist that can settle over the city for days, giving the place a dreamlike and nostalgic dimension.
The entire surrounding area with its magnificent natural landscapes is a true inspiration. Six beautiful lakes, lakeside villages with monuments lost in the depths of time, and stone-carved listed hamlets compose a unique canvas at the northern tip of Greece.
