The fairytale village of Macedonia

At an elevation of 1,350 metres, on the slopes of Mount Vitsi, stands Nymfaio, considered one of the most beautiful villages in Europe. This listed traditional hamlet looks as if it has come out of a fairytale. With stone-carved houses and cobbled paths, it is a mountain oasis surrounded by a beech forest of peerless natural beauty.
Nymfaio, once called Niviesta or Neveska, has a long and turbulent history. At the beginning of the 14th century AD, nomadic Vlachs settled here. From the late 17th century AD and for approximately three hundred years, it was one of the largest silversmithing and goldsmithing centres in the Balkans, a fact reflected in its impressive mansions. Although this land once reached the brink of abandonment, today it has been reborn thanks to the return of many locals.
Nymfaio is delightful year-round. In winter, the temperature drops and the snowy landscape transforms the area into a fairytale scene. The arrival of spring is unique, as it is marked by the waking of the bears at the nearby Arcturos sanctuary. Summer brings coolness under the forest foliage. In autumn, fallen leaves in all shades of brown and yellow, the first rains, the mist, and the lit fireplaces compose the ultimate setting.
The fascinating nature surrounding the village, combined with its glorious past, the unique architecture, and the hospitable restaurants and cafés make Nymfaio a captivating destination.
