Vibrancy, history and inexhaustible nature
The city sprawls around a hill, once its ancient acropolis. From this vantage point spreads a fertile landscape towards the expansive plain of the Strymon river, a location that, since antiquity, has favoured settlement and urban growth. Serres flourished during the Ottoman period, becoming a commercial hub.
Today, Serres is a city with a vibrant daily rhythm and a large student population. Byzantine churches, old mosques, Ottoman fountains, and scattered historical buildings co-exist with modern squares, commercial streets, and apartment blocks from the 1960s. Nightlife is lively, and the people are welcoming and kind, while local gastronomy is an integral part of the city's identity, with influences from Pontus, Asia Minor, and the Balkans.
Across the plain and surrounding hills lie archaeological sites, picturesque villages, and unique natural landscapes. Caves, gorges, and towering mountains complete the scene, while Lake Kerkini is a magnificent wetland.
