A land taken from a medieval fairy tale

A magical Byzantine castle town in the south-eastern Peloponnese, Monemvasia is a dreamlike destination. Built upon a massive rock that appears to emerge from the sea, it is connected to the mainland only via a narrow causeway. Its name is derived from this single approach (“moni emvasi”).
It is divided into the Upper and Lower Town. Built near the coast, but protected by the natural rock wall, Lower Town is a living museum. Narrow stone-paved streets and stone houses with tiled roofs, arches, galleries, and coats of arms create a fairytale setting. Small shops, beautiful restaurants, and courtyards overlooking the sea complete the picture. 
Upper Town stands at the top of the rock and is uninhabited. Ruins of mansions and Ottoman baths, Byzantine churches, marble imperial thrones, and old walls – all with an unobstructed view of the sea – transport visitors to eras past. 
In Monemvasia, you don’t need a map. Simply follow the stone-paved streets and surrender to the magic of a settlement that once welcomed Byzantine emperors and merchants from every corner of the Mediterranean. Here, you have the unique opportunity to spend the night in a medieval tower or enjoy a romantic dinner on the roof of a tower house.
Outside the walls, the modern town stretches out by the sea, while the broader region offers wonderful beaches, picturesque villages, and unique landscapes.
