A Tradition of Estate Winemaking
Despite the mountainous climate of the Pindus region not traditionally favouring extensive viticulture, the wider Grevena area currently boasts approximately 300 hectares of vineyards, with a clear upward trend in recent years. This development is no coincidence, as wine and tsipouro pomace brandy are an integral part of the daily lives and social cohesion of the local population. They are the products that accompany their joys and alleviate their sorrows at every gathering.
The Paths of the Local Vineyard
Scattered, small vineyards are primarily found in the mountainous villages of Trikomo, Kosmati, and the surrounding areas, southwest of the city of Grevena. Cultivation extends to Sydendro and Elefthero in the north, to Aimilianos in the south, as well as the Deskati area in the southeast, and the foothills of Mount Vourinos in the east. In these regions, engagement with the land remains vibrant, preserving the authenticity of the local landscape.
Identity and Flavour
1990 saw the Grevena Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) recognised, encompassing the entire area of the Regional Unit. This designation applies to red and rosé wines (dry, semi-dry, and semi-sweet), crafted from grape varieties such as Xinomavro, Moschomavro, and Roditis, as well as the international varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah.
Although bottled examples of this PGI are rare in the market, the true magic lies in the village winemaking. In the traditional tavernas of the villages, visitors have the opportunity to savour homemade wines and locally produced artisanal tsipouro pomace brandy. These authentic flavours, the result of personal toil and passion, offer a unique tasting experience that reflects the untamed nature of Grevena.
