Wine Tourism in Thrace

At the Roots of Dionysus

According to ancient tradition, Thrace was one of the most important cradles of the Dionysian cult, deeply intertwined with wine and vine cultivation. Wine tourism here offers a rare encounter with a global genetic heritage, as the vineyards of Evros stand out for their rich diversity of indigenous grape varieties. This living natural museum allows each vine to tell a story that spans thousands of years.
Soufli uniquely combines its renowned silk heritage with a long-standing winemaking tradition. The local microclimate brings out the distinctive character of Mavroudi, an iconic grape variety known for its remarkable strength and depth. The quality of local wines has historically been so high that Soufli exported them even to renowned wine-producing countries such as France and Italy. Alongside Mavroudi, you will discover varieties such as Zoumiatiko, Pamidi and Karnachala, as well as international grapes including Merlot and Chardonnay. This excellence impressed French silk merchants, who became enthusiastic advocates of Soufli wines across the European market.
A highlight not to be missed is a visit to the region’s wineries, many of which are housed in traditional silk-producing buildings. Tasting Thrace PGI wines is often accompanied by tsipouro, a carefully crafted distilled spirit that complements every culinary moment.
This experience reveals the true essence of the region: wine and tsipouro are the key to Soufli’s hospitality. In the past, every household kept its own barrel to welcome guests. In this way, wine remains the link between ancient heritage and contemporary gastronomy.
