Beat together the first four ingredients. Sift the flour, baking powder and bicarbonate of soda three times. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the oil mixture and mix well to form a dough.
Take small portions of dough (about the size of an egg), shape them into oval forms, and place them on a baking tray lined with baking paper. Bake in a moderate oven for about 30 minutes.
Boil all the syrup ingredients together for 5 minutes, then allow the syrup to cool completely.
Dip the hot melomakarona into the cold syrup for 15–20 seconds.
Remove and arrange on a serving platter. Drizzle with honey and sprinkle with chopped walnuts and cinnamon.
